ssp vernus scattered in Ireland, Wales & N England. Mostly replacing serotinus (the 'usual one') in central & N Scotland. ssp litoralis on coasts of N & W Scotland, the only ssp. in Shetland
ssp serotinus - up to 8 pairs of branches; long, wide angle to stem (>50 degree angle); 2-7 pairs intercalary leaves; style exceeds upper lip; bracts do not exceed flower; summer or autumn-flowering
ssp litoralis - 1-3 pairs of branches; short, held close to stem <30 degree angle; 0-1 pair intercalary leaves; style not exceeding upper lip; bracts exceed flower; spring-flowering
ssp vernus - 1-4 pairs of branches; short, held close to stem >30-<50 degree angle; 0-1 pair intercalary leaves; style exceeds upper lip; bracts exceed flower; summer-flowering
