Moments before this photo was taken the heron carried a Water Vole down to the water’s edge before devouring it; unfortunately – or perhaps fortunately – I didn’t get pictures of this, the person on my left pointed out the bird as it walked down to the water line but it was only visible momentarily and I was too slow swinging the camera round. It was then out of my sight but others further down the hide were able to observe it eat the vole.

Why does our wildlife have this propensity to eat its endangered or rare cousins? How many times has a rare bird shown up and been taken almost immediately by a Sparrowhawk?
