Observation - Bombus sp. ? - UK and Ireland. Description: Initially I thought this was a bee fly as it frequently hovered for several seconds and would then dart away. Initially I thought this was a bee fly as it frequently hovered for several seconds and would then dart away. However the photo of it on a flowering currant shows Bombus wing venation and thick legs. It was about 17mm long with a very long tongue. I've pondered over B. muscorum and B. pascuorum and have gone for the latter due to the time of year (B. muscorum typically doesn't fly until May) and dark hairs on the thorax. I'm sure the Bombus experts on Ispot will correct me if I'm wrong :-)
