Birch Polypore (Fomitopsis betulina)

Observation - Birch Polypore (Fomitopsis betulina) - UK and Ireland. Description: Over the years I've passed this Birch tree many times and often thought of stopping to take photos.

Over the years I've passed this Birch tree many times and often thought of stopping to take photos. It has obviously suffered over the winter and there's just a 6' stump left along with a couple of broken bits on the ground below so perhaps my last chance. (And after a long stretch uphill against the wind I was quite glad of an excuse to get off the bike for a couple of minutes.)
The fruiting bodies (photos 1, 2 & 3) are a little past their best: when fresh and before they get covered in algae they are almost pure white above. Photo 4 shows the pores on the underside: again a rather old and soggy specimen.
The final 3 photos show the long-term effect of the fungus on the wood. By the time you see the fruiting bodies the tree is doomed.
