I first spotted this spirally trail in the autumn, on the pavement outside my apartment building in Shepherd's Bush, west London. When I mentioned it to a friend, she dismissed it as something that a child's toy had left. Unconvinced, I disagreed, preferring to keep an open mind.

To my delight, I then spotted it again several months later in May, on an old wooden door on a building not far from a river in western Ireland. This is the picture that's uploaded - I hope it's clear enough to see.

I think it might be a slug or a snail, but I've had a good look around at both sites and couldn't see any creatures to support this. The spiral effect is very consistent in its form and oddly enough, it does look a bit like the steel spirals that kids would play with on a staircase.

Any ideas out there?
