Ivy Bee

Ivy Bee

Observation - Ivy Bee - UK and Ireland. Description: I saw about 50 of these honeybee-sized solitary bees digging, and using, burrows around old sandpits

I saw about 50 of these honeybee-sized solitary bees digging, and using, burrows around old sandpits in suburban York. They were only recognized as a distinct species in 1993, first recorded in the UK in 2001, and have only been seen in northern England in the last year or so. Nowadays, worth looking out for during autumn anywhere where there's Ivy for them to feed upon, and bare patches of sandy soil for them to nest.
