5mm duckweed leaves seemed to have leaf miners. I took some home for a closer look. Under my stereo microscope I could see larvae chewing away inside some of the leaves. When they're tired of one leaf they break out through the side and move to another leaf (they can't swim but can't sink because of surface tension). Once they've got onto the leaf they eat a hole in the top and get back inside. Pupation's supposed to be outside the leaf but mine pupated inside - they hadn't much choice. Tiny weevils emerged: they can't swim but can walk on water, though I couldn't get mine to keep still for a photo on water. It eats duckweed.
You could follow the whole life cycle in a takeaway food box.
