Just now, parts of Orkney Mainland are deserts. there has been no rain to speak of for a couple of weeks. Don't get me wrong though, these deserts are just oases in an otherwise fertile, green and lush landscape - get it?
Anyway, these areas are not devoid of life, nor will they endure for long. So I have found it fascinating to watch the season's invertebrates attempt dangerous crossings.
Here we see the Heather Beetle, moving from the edge of one ericaceous forest to another.
They are not easy to see - vague-brown and small
