Large group of orange-red capped fungi in various stages observed growing in overlapping clusters from woodchip mulch within Stumpery area of the park. The caps are initially convex, flattening with age (Photos 1,7,8). Cap sizes ranged from 5 – 70mm (see 20 pence coin size reference). Fortunate to observe attached full veil on young specimens and observe remnants on the cap as the veil detaches (Photo 3). Gills look to be initially adnate, becoming more sinuate in appearance as the cap expands. Gill colour changes dramatically from pale cream to olive brown and finally purplish-brown; in older specimens the gill edges are contrastingly lighter than faces. The stem is white; smooth inside the cap margins & note covering of fragile scales beneath on young specimens. Orange staining at the base of stem on several specimens. Possibly our worst ever spore sample as we left too long and specimens were mealy but the limited spores on Photos 11,12 do appear to show a purplish tinge.
