Encrusting bryozoan species observed under rock within intertidal zone of Whitburn beach; size approx 15mm diameter and < 1mm thickness (see coin size reference). We have so gone round the houses with this identification but feel fortunate to have finally come across a photo of a similar looking bryozoan species added by ‘leenestofvipers’ (see Comments section). Rather wish we could have taken better photos on our observation – this species was slightly translucent and on initial notes wrote “hard, crystalline structure, cylindrical dots”. I have since learned that the “dots are likely to be opercula (openings) which allow animal to filter feed. Have tried to zoom in on the best photo (Photo 4) but limited resolution and a lesson to me about avoiding sun-glare. Would really welcome any advice / support.
