Red ant nest observed underneath limestone rock within calcareous grassland area at the base of Grassy Hill. When disturbed the workers immediately began moving eggs and grubs. I believe the comparatively larger individual in Photo 1 & (close-up) 2 is a Queen given size, wider head, larger thorax and distended abdomen. Likely to be either Myrmica ruginodis or M. rubra but unfortunately my photos aren’t detailed enough to show distinguishing features including thorax spines. We always welcome advice and live in hope of first species ID for an ant on the Hills!
