Mining bees

Observation - Mining bees - UK and Ireland. Description: Possibly Osmia rufa? There was a large number of these small bees, with orange-furred abdomens and legs, very active in a dry, un-vegetated clay ditch. They seemed to be excavating tunnels in the mud, except unlike other mining bees I have seen the tunnel

Possibly Osmia rufa? There was a large number of these small bees, with orange-furred abdomens and legs, very active in a dry, un-vegetated clay ditch. They seemed to be excavating tunnels in the mud, except unlike other mining bees I have seen the tunnels they were digging were connected together and all in one small patch - they seemed to be working together. Any ideas on species or what is going on here - are they social or solitary?
