This Buzzard was found collapsed in a field. Buzzards will often play dead but this one was thin and weak due to the massive swelling around the eye and in the nasal sinus preventing it from hunting. The bird was anaesthetised and the huge swelling under the eye (which proved to be an abscess ) lanced. Avian pus, like rabbit pus, has a cream cheese like constancy so the abscess was scraped out. Photo 4 shows how much pus was removed. The swelling over the eyeball proved to be an abscess in the third eyelid. This was also lanced and flushed. Luckly the eye was intact and had very little corneal damage. Antibiotic and anti inflammatory therapy was started as well as assisted feeding. It has recovered well from the procedure but will need to continue treatment.
