I find that the hoverflies V. zonaria and V. inanis are not always easy to tell apart - e.g. in part shade. The crucial feature, I believe, lies on the underside as the second tergite - which is black in V. zonaria and yellow/white in V. inanis*. On these grounds, I think the hoverfly on the left is V. zonaria and that on the right is V. inanis.
