Female Hoverfly

Female Hoverfly

Observation - Female Hoverfly - UK and Ireland. Description: At the bottom of my garden, well away from the house, I have a bucket into which go the roots of perennial weeds such as docks and bindweed. Covered with water, the roots slowly start to decay - all very smelly, but a great activator for the compost heap

At the bottom of my garden, well away from the house, I have a bucket into which go the roots of perennial weeds such as docks and bindweed. Covered with water, the roots slowly start to decay - all very smelly, but a great activator for the compost heap. The liquid proved to be very attractive to 2 female hoverflies which spent many minutes walking round the bucket with their ovipositors extended, presumably laying eggs.
