Common Horsetail

Common Horsetail

Observation - Common Horsetail - UK and Ireland. Description: The fertile stems of this native perennial made an impressive sight in the slightly marshy area of the field. These stems die back when spores produced in the 'cone' have ripened. Followed by the sterile green stems. A nuisance if you get it in the garden

The fertile stems of this native perennial made an impressive sight in the slightly marshy area of the field. These stems die back when spores produced in the 'cone' have ripened. Followed by the sterile green stems. A nuisance if you get it in the garden, but I have to admit a sneaking fondness for it, particularly the Giant Horsetail!
