Red tailed bumblebee female observed on thistle species, Tunstall Hills, Sunderland. This individual was observed with a small number of mites over body. I have seen an increasing prevalence of mites this year and all sightings have been on B. lapidarius. I have read that most species of mites do not have an adverse effect on the bee as they help in keeping the nests clean. However some sightings of heavy infestations this year have caused concern as individuals affected appear disorientated and seemingly unable to fly. Is this normal?
