Observation - Larval case? - UK and Ireland. Description: Looks like the larval case of something that emerged from the base of a small tree that was blown down during gales a couple of years ago. There were half a dozen of these cases all looking very much the same as this one. About 15mm is exposed. Plenty

Looks like the larval case of something that emerged from the base of a small tree that was blown down during gales a couple of years ago. There were half a dozen of these cases all looking very much the same as this one. About 15mm is exposed. Plenty of unoccupied holes about the same size also present. Much larger than woodworm holes. I'm guessing some kind of wood-boring beetle. Any ideas?
