This is a typical casual garden escape of the IOW Undercliff. It has probably escaped from Ventnor Botanic Gardens, but it is increasingly grown in gardens and is self sown. A few years ago the cold winters really killed a lot of the mature plants, but the last two winters have given young seedlings a chance to mature and flower. This plant seems to arouse strong feelings in gardeners and the public. Personally I love it, it's exotic, statuesque, flowers over a long period and very attractive to insects. Others positively hate it with a vengeance.I think we are lucky to have this exotic species growing so happily in our area.It is listed in the Flora of the IOW and Stace. You just have to be careful to keep it under control!
