A Saprobic fungus the Green Elfcup grows mostly on Oak. The small fruiting bodies are often less than 0.5 cm in diameter and seen less frequently than the vibrant blue-green staining of the wood which the fungus causes.

Containing a pigment called xylindein the stained wood is valuable for decorative woodworking. Famously, it is used to create the elaborate inlaid designs on Tunbridge Ware.
