So called because it was once thought to be used by Gipsies. The plant makes a black dye which Gypsies were said to use to darken their skin to make them look like Africans and so improve their chances of fooling people into believing their exotic magic and potions worked. Am surprised in this day and age, the plant hasn't been given a new name. Found commonly in freshwater habitats. This was growing out of a crack in a canal side.
