Observation - Syrphus - UK and Ireland. Description: My, what an education a decent book on Hoverflies is. I believe this is a female Syrphus - the eyes are separated - and I THINK, based upon the sizable black portion of the hind tibia which is just about visible, this therefore comes down to either

I believe this is a female Syrphus - the eyes are separated - and I THINK, based upon the sizable black portion of the hind tibia which is just about visible, this therefore comes down to either S. vitripennis or S. torvus. Splitting those two seems to depend upon microtrichiae on the wings, whatever they are (I looked 'em up - small hairs). I don't think they're visible so I think that's where I stop. :))
