Volucella bombylans

Observation - Volucella bombylans. Description: The red-tailed form similar to Bombus lapidarius. Had the white-tailed plumata form similar to B.lucorum last week. I assume the different forms stick to their look-alike bumblebee species. If so, this one is going to have a hard time - very few lapidariu

The red-tailed form similar to Bombus lapidarius. Had the white-tailed plumata form similar to B.lucorum last week. I assume the different forms stick to their look-alike bumblebee species. If so, this one is going to have a hard time - very few lapidarius about here this year. In contrast have at least two lucorum nests in garden. Am watching for bombylans trying to get in.

It would be a good 'citizen science' project to keep track of the proportions of these in people's gardens/patches.
