Hoverflies in the genus Brachyopa don't look much like typical hoverflies, and can be hard to find. Their breeding habitat is sap runs on trees, and the adults can be seen around suitable trees. These ones however were strongly attracted to flowers of Guelder-rose, with at least ten individuals feeding and mating on the flowers, within an ancient woodland RSPB reserve.
