some sort of whitebeam

Observation - some sort of whitebeam - UK and Ireland. Description: One of a mixed planting of Prunus padus and Sorbus separating a small area of grassland from the towpath of the Trent and Mersey Canal.

One of a mixed planting of Prunus padus and Sorbus separating a small area of grassland from the towpath of the Trent and Mersey Canal. The Sorbus are quite variable, some looking like Sorbus aria and some like Sorbus intermedia.

This particular plant differs from the usual run of planted Sorbus aria in having deeply toothed leaves, and in the young leaves not being white above as well as below (a few white hairs can be seen on the upper side of the leaves).

I have two hypotheses - either a planting of seed-raised Sorbus aria from wild collected seed, or a planting of mixed native whitebeam species.
