One of the nice things about being at Barns for the door opening is you do get a chance to wiz round before the buggy brigade. Don’t get me wrong I think it is fantastic that young people are enjoying wildlife near the heart of London and are willing and able to introduce very young children to the environment, equally important to remember we all enjoy things at our own pace. Using all my field craft, doing that ‘make no sound’ walk, this bird was pretty unconcerned about my approach when the young couple I had held the door open for at the entrance came charging past, buggy crunching on the gravel of the ‘Summer Route’! Not sure they even realised he had been there.

One forgets how small male SHs are; as I rounded the corner into this little ride I first noticed the movement of a bird going from low to high and assumed from the size it was a blackbird or similar, only when I found it in the bins did I notice grey and a hooked bill.
