Observation - Spindle in Winter - UK and Ireland. Description: I've never seen Spindle growing as free-style small trees before: I usually encounter it as an untidy shrub, in hedgerows. First pic shows the opposite branching, which can be clearly seen from a short distance. Second pic shows the smaller branchings,

I've never seen Spindle growing as free-style small trees before: I usually encounter it as an untidy shrub, in hedgerows.

First pic shows the opposite branching, which can be clearly seen from a short distance. Second pic shows the smaller branchings, all very nearly at right angles to the larger branch.

Bark is clear green when not darkened by the sun: again, I haven't seen Spindle growing out in the open like this, and the upper sides of the branches were almost brown.

Remains of the distinctive orange-and-shocking-pink fruits can still be seen, now brown and starting to rot.
