Observation - Pale/Great Oak Beauty - UK and Ireland. Description: About 42mm wingspan. Attracted to MV light trap. It looks like either a Pale or Great Oak Beauty but unfortunately it has lost a lot of scales. The upper surface (1st photo) is more like a GOB but this isn't diagnostic. About 42mm wingspan. Attracted to MV light trap. It looks like either a Pale or Great Oak Beauty but unfortunately it has lost a lot of scales. The upper surface (1st photo) is more like a GOB but this isn't diagnostic. The underside (2nd photo) shows residual light square patches and dark shading at tips of forewings so it could be a POB. The 3rd photo is a rather ungainly pose to show the upper surface of the hind wings. However the central dark marks (GOB) or marks with light centres (POB) are not evident. So I've reserved judgement - can anybody else be conclusive? [NB the moth was drugged for these photos and happily flew away when the photo session was over!]
