The eyes here are at the front of the head rather than at the side and they appear to have a central lens (?) suggestive of stereoscopic vision. Among butterflies, is this a structure that is specific to the Speckled Wood and linked to aerial aggression between males in this species? Also, I don’t see a tubular proboscis in these images. Does the Speckled Wood have a more sponge-like structure, geared to soaking up honeydew?
