South African stromatolites
South African stromatolites - Southern Africa : The South African coast is host to extensive and well-developed actively depositing stromatolite poo
The South African coast is host to extensive and well-developed actively depositing stromatolite pools at various selected sites. The pools occur on rocky shores at the interface of freshwater and seawater environments. The coastal pools act as a mixing zone and fresh, brackish and saline states are exhibited in the pools for specific time intervals. These fragile ecosystems are coastal treasures that the general public is unaware of. The purpose of creating this iSpot project is to promote awareness regarding the stromatolites amongst South Africans whilst aiding future research. Ultimately, the hope is that new sites may be identified by added observations, or changes in known sites tracked over time.
