The members of the Family Tenebrionidae tend to occur everywhere in southern Africa in highly diverse habitats. They range from ~1 mm in length to ~80 mm, and occur in just about every shape imaginable (as long as it has six legs, a head, Pronotum and Elytra). Besides the early researchers in to Coleopterous Fauna (Fairemaire, Fåhraeus, Gerstaecker, Lacordaire, Wiedemann, Guérin-Méneville, Thomson, ect) research was carried further by Gebien , Borchmann, Wilke, Peringuey, (yes and even Pic) which paved the way for Ardoin, Koch, Pennrith, Schulze, Endrody-Younga, Holm to further expand on the knowledge base. In recent times, Ferrer, Schawaller, Lillig, Bremer have made great contributions to the further understanding of the tenebrionids.
In light of all of these persons research into the Tenebrionids, and our region's great diversity, we find it amazing that our personal knowledge was restricted to a 5-5-4 tarsal formula. To say the least, out personal ability to identify with confidence to sub-family level is/was lacking.
Hopefully, with time, we and the Ispot community, can gain a better understanding .... up to tribe/genus level.
