The Houwhoek Hotel is at the east end of the Elgin basin, which is an intermontane "high-altitude basin". On the current N2, historically it was on the road to the interior. Only 82 km (51 minutes travel today) historically it was day 3 by fast horse cart or day 5-6 by oxwagon from Cape Town. Consequently it was a major stop en route to the east, and very well collected by botanists.

I don't know of any studies, but it certainly was (prior to the Protea Atlas Project) the top Proteaceae locality, and possibly even top type locality.

Here we collect data on the species currently in the area for comparison. I have estimated about a day from the hotel by oxwagon or foot (ca 10km), assuming that this would be the maximum extent of the locality "Houw Hoek".
