Hypoxis hemerocallidea, a long living herb that is experiencing a major decline as a result of it being regarded as a muthi plant with properties that can boost immune systems to combat HIV and cancer. In the last 20 years the species has become well-known as a muthi plant. Apart from the obvious threat due to harvesting, land transformation and habitat loss across its distributional range are also factors that have contributed to the deterioration of the species. Hypoxis hemerocallidea is known to flourish in the summer rainfall region of South Africa. The plant can be found at grasslands and woodlands in 7 of our provinces with an extensive distributional range across the eastern region of Southern Africa including Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique.
