Crinum species (Lily species) are herbaceous plants that are considered to be amongst the largest species in the Amaryllidaceae family. 23 of the 130 known Crinum species are indigenous to Southern Africa. The genus Crinum can be found in various habitat types, each with their own niches and adaptations. Crinum species has been known to contain medicinal properties of significant importance to African traditional medicine. The Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers are in search of the following medicinal Crinum species, C. bulbispermum, C. macowanii, C. moorei and C. stuhlmannii. These plants are recognized for their ability to treat infections, colds and flus, swelling, rheumatic fever, open wounds as well as several other ailments. These 4 Crinum species are frequently acquired in muthi markets across South Africa and as a result of the high demand, exploitation and increased harvesting, the plants are on the verge of becoming threatened. C. bulbispermum, C. macowanii and C. stuhlmannii are declining species according to SANBIs Red list whilst C. moorei is listed are vulnerable.
