Eucomis, commonly referred to as the “pineapple flowers” or “pineapple Lily” is a genus in the Hyacinthaceae family. The genus is restricted to Southern African countries where it is distinguished by the existence of tightly grouped leaf-like bracts that develop above the inflorescence. Eucomis autumnalis [declining], Eucomis bicolor [Near threatened] and Eucomis comosa [declining] are just 3 of the 12 species currently known. These 3 species are considered to be threatened as they are being harvested in large numbers for the use in traditional medicine. The CREW KZN team is monitoring these populations and is in need of data for these species. By uploading your observations onto iSpot, you’ll be assisting CREW with the monitoring of these threatened species.
