Trees are a fundamental component of the ecosystem functioning’s providing oxygen, food and shelter to all life forms. By not conserving them, we will lose much more than just a few trees. They assist with moderating climate, filtering air, reducing the effects of global warming and preventing flooding and erosion. Trees are responsible for keeping our planet alive, without trees, this sphere we call home would become a barren land where life would seize to exist. Trees are threatened by various factors such as harvesting, climate change, deforestation, urban development, habitat degradation and pollution to name a few.
South Africa is home to over 1 700 indigenous tree species of which, 92 are of conservation concern in KZN. SANBI’s Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) programme KZN node would like to obtain data for threatened trees known to occur in the province. To begin, we would like to focus on the Top 10 threatened trees. Please tag your observations with "Threatened Trees"
