The Tankwa Karoo National Park is popular with birders looking for Karoo endemics. The Oudebaaskraal Dam also has waterfowl. Some 187 bird species are known from the park.

Mammals were largely hunted out and from 2004 Cape Mountain Zebra, Gemsbuck, Red Hartebeest, Springbuck and Eland have been introduced. It is planned to add Brown Hyena and Cheetah. Smaller mammals abound.

Vegetation

The area is Succulent Karoo Biome on the lowlands and Renosterveld in the uplands. Vegetation types conserved in the park include:

Central Tanqua Grassy Plain
Roggeveld Shale Renosterveld
Tanqua Escarpment
Succulent Karoo
Roggeveld Karoo
Tanqua Wash River,
Nieuwoudtville Roggeveld Dolerite Renosterveld.

The flora is most spectacular from August to October in wet years. Some 780 plant species have been recorded. Invasive alien plant infestations are largely limited to riverine areas and are managed via removal and monitoring.
