The Kogelberg is the biodiversity centre and heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Only the Cape Peninsula and Cedarberg Centres approach it for endemism and diversity.

Fortunately two reserves - run by Cape Nature and City of Cape Town - cover the vast majority of the area. Unfortunately the south coastal fringe is urbanised with heavy pressures on the remaining lowlands for golfing, graveyards, sewerage farms and squatter camps. Alien invasives are also a major issue. Water is limiting and dams and extraction are a threat to the integrity and heart of the Kogelberg.
