In an estuary fresh and marine waters mix. This creates a special habitat that is rich in nutrients and is highly productive. But, living conditions can be harsh and very variable. The plants and animals that live in estuaries have to be specialised to cope with changing salinity and temperature.

It has been expanded and now also includes aquatic habitats and coastal wetlands.
