Snake sucker

Snake sucker

Observation - Snake sucker - Southern Africa. Description: One of the gardening ladies told me about this fruiting creeper in the bush, begged me not to go too

One of the gardening ladies told me about this fruiting creeper in the bush, begged me not to go too close because the Nyoga (snakes) spend their days sucking on the bitter juice! Of course I rushed there asap, but sadly found no snakes, sucking or otherwise. Just a very dry, tough, leafless creeper draped over a dead-looking tree sparsely decorated with c. 70-90mm melons. The stem was incredibly tough and involved much sawing with my penknife to get the lady a single melon. The leaves in the photograph don't appear to belong to the creeper, but to alien Ipomoea sharing the tree.
