Observation - Friday's ants? - Southern Africa. Description: I am pretty sure these are Monomoriums but have struggled with the ID. The nests are very large and almost always associated with termitaries. The ants run in trails. They have no spines, are all the same caste and have a clear petiole and post-petiole: v

I am pretty sure these are Monomoriums but have struggled with the ID. The nests are very large and almost always associated with termitaries. The ants run in trails. They have no spines, are all the same caste and have a clear petiole and post-petiole: very aggressive. The mandibles and antennae are paler and at first I thought 'Monomorium xanthognathum', but they are too big: almost 4 mm, much bigger than the M xantho's I've seen on the Peninsula. Fiercely aggressive, they even take on Anoplolepis without fear. They are very common at Papkuils and also at Salmanslaagte [obs to come]. Not Pheidole, not Tetramorium ... I have plumped for M fridae, look forward to your comments, MeldeM and others ...
