10cm hairy caterpillar being beaten prior to eating by Striped cuckoo. The hairs from these caterpillars are urticarious. I was pleased to see that someone can eat them! The caterpillars are associated with Combretum imberbe trees ( Common names:Leadwood or Motswiri). The moth (which friends and I have failed to get photos of) is non descript, coloured with greys, is medium sized (4-5cms?) and triangular in shape. The caterpillars got inside our houses and pupated, even the cocoons had the irritatng hairs.
