Thousands of Pugnacious Ants we scurrying up the trunk to some place of interest high up the tree while as many were coming back down. Neither those workers going up the tree nor those coming down appeared to be carrying anything.
Individuals on opposite tracks stopped briefly to exchange information as ants do. Some stopped to briefly investigate patches of gum, or other invertebrates. One patch of gum had insect parts imbedded in it and passing ants would tug at those to try and dislodge them. Some workers themselves were attacked and carried down the trunk. Presumably if you're an injured or weakened worker your comrades weed you out.
