Odd sugar ants

Odd sugar ants

Observation - Odd sugar ants - Southern Africa. Description: On shale band near Pakhuis Pass, the nest entrance had a small 'tower' of clayey goo, and at first I thought they were termites. Definitely ants and I reckon they are Camponotus emarginatus, which we also collected in 2011 on the high Cederberg shale band

On shale band near Pakhuis Pass, the nest entrance had a small 'tower' of clayey goo, and at first I thought they were termites. Definitely ants and I reckon they are Camponotus havilandi, which we also collected in 2011 on the high Cederberg shale band near Tafelberg. I originally ID'd these as the closely-related 'C emarginatus', but C. havilandi is the only SA camponotine that has this coloration.
Quite small for camponotines - minors about 4mm, majors 6-8. Did not see any queens or reproductives.
