South Africa is endowed with a rich variety of plant species, however one in four of South Africa’s plant species is considered rare or endangered. Of the over 20,400 plant species in South Africa, more than 2,500 (13%) are threatened with extinction and a further 11% (2,232) are considered near threatened, data deficient of rare endemics.

CREW data are used in conservation planning, guiding sustainable Land-use and keeping the Red List for plants up to date.
