The purpose of this project is to determine the current distribution of introduced Paspalum species in South Africa.
Nine Paspalum species are known (or suspected) to occur in South Africa, they were previously introduced in the country for pasture purposes. The species are:
Paspalum nutans
P. notatum
P.virgatum
P. vaginatum
P dilatatum
P distichum
P. urvillei
P. quadrifarium
P. scrobiculatum
One of the species (Paspalum quadrifarium) is known to occur in Kwa-Zulu Natal and has been listed as a category 1a on the NEMBA regulations, but the current distribution of the other Paspalum species is uncertain.
This project is targeted to conservation managers, researchers, grass experts, any individual who can identify grass species to at least genus level and anyone who have previously worked with this species (for example farmers).
