It seems that the definition of invasive species or alien or indeed native species is not clear cut when looking at different regions of the world. For example when comparing areas that have been relatively stable for millions of years to those that were under a thick sheet of ice just 10,000 years ago. There are also issues around when the 'non-native' species arrived, archaeophytes being species that arrived in ancient times and neophytes being more recent introductions.

This project tries to use a broad definition and includes all from the http://www.ispotnature.org/projects/invasive-species project plus those species classed as 'aliens'.

The term alien species (especially when used as a tag on ispot) is often used for species that are not native to an area and that are affecting the natural environment. The term may be seen as being more or less equivalent to invasive species. In reality only a small proportion of species that arrive to a new area go on to become invasive.
