In our cellar (cave) of our cottage near Grignols there are usually several of these tiny bats hanging from the ceiling. On my most recent inspection, for example (5 Nov 2009), I counted no fewer than 18, all hibernating. When I walk in during the daytime, some start to twitch a bit and, if I spend some time there with the door ajar, some will fly off to places higher up in the cave. As a rule, I try not to disturb them too much, especially when they are hibernating. On occasions I find one or more bats hanging from another. In these pics, you can see several clustered together - can someone tell me why? (I would describe this at rather unusual behavior: normally they are spaced out, all hanging from their own little bit of ceiling!) Unfortunately, the pics are blurred, probably due to slow shutter speed in the relative darkness, and camera shake; but also I find it quite difficult to get the thing to focus at short distances. I think that these small bats are examples of le petit rhinolophe. Can someone confirm this, please? I will try to dig out some better pics when I am back in England.
