Diploschistes caesioplumbeus (parasitic stage)

Observation - Diploschistes caesioplumbeus (parasitic stage) - Global. Description: I was vaguely aware that this species starts out as a parasite on Lecanora gangaleoides, but hadn't seen this stage of its life cycle until yesterday. Here, what remains of the Lecanora is peppered with the pore-like, 'toothed' apothecia of the Diploschis

I was vaguely aware that this species starts out as a parasite on Lecanora gangaleoides, but hadn't seen this stage of its life cycle until yesterday. Here, what remains of the Lecanora is peppered with the pore-like, 'toothed' apothecia of the Diploschistes, which kills the fungal component of the host and enslaves its algal cells, finally becoming an independent thallus. Savagery on a lichen timescale.
