First find for me for this species & not one I expected to come across at this otherwise unassuming site (a small strip of rough grassland, brambles & thistles sandwiched in between houses & allotments).
I don't know if the making of a cylindrical clearing is typical for this species, though possibly dependent on vegetation present, but the last image shows the typical vertical zig-zags for Argiopes. Possibly wouldn't have seen it if I didn't scare a grasshopper into it's web! A later visit when the spider was at the bottom of the web, just visible, revealed that an 'alarm line' was attached to an overhanging grass, apparently drawn down through the middle of the web, & a little jigging brought the spider rushing up to the centre of the web.
